Desktop apps for Windows and macOS

For when you need to work offline or talk to printers, barcode scanners and production machines.

When you need installed software

Almost everything runs in the browser these days, and I'll usually recommend a business web app. Software installed on the computer makes sense in a few cases:

  • people have to keep working when the connection drops for hours, in a warehouse or on a building site;
  • the software drives label printers, scales, barcode scanners or machines connected to the computer;
  • the data must not leave the office.

Windows and macOS

The same program can run on both. I choose the technology case by case, looking at what it has to do and who will keep it updated over the years.

A desktop program often works alongside a web app: the installed one in the office, the browser or a phone outside, with the same data. The steps are the same as for every project, from Process.
